Advanced Regenerative Therapies (ART) provides a stem cell isolation and expansion service for companion animal medicine. This service, launched by two Colorado State University researchers, is based on the processing of stem cells from autologous bone marrow aspirates. Stem cells exist in low density in bone marrow. At ART, the stem cells are isolated from the bone marrow and allowed to expand to millions of cells, a number considered to be adequate for clinical applications. After expansion, the stem cells are returned to the veterinarian for injection back into the animal from which the marrow was taken. Stem cells will be supplied only to licensed veterinarians for the purpose of treating injuries and will not be issued to public pet owners. Current research shows that bone marrow-derived stem cells can greatly benefit animals with certain injuries. For example, a study out of Colorado State University evaluated stem cell treatments for 15 horses with medically non-responsive joint injuries that were not expected to recover. After injection with stem cells, 10 out of 15 horses no longer showed clinical symptoms of discomfort that were associated with the original injury. Veterinarians have been using stems cells in treatments of joint, tendon and ligament injuries in animals.
